Dropped passes were just one of the problems for UCLA in its 31-22 loss to K-State on Saturday. The Bruins’ defense also was suspect as Daniel Thomas ran for a career-high 234 yards.
We’ve heard some national writers say the Bruins would be one of the surprises of the season. But as we said weeks ago, we’re not buying it.

A few weeks ago, they were one of baseball’s hottest teams and driving towar the NL West title. Now, the Padres have dropped 9 straight, the latest setback being a 6-2 loss to the Rockies. Oh doctor.

Offensively, USC was impressive in its season-opening victory over host Hawaii Thursday night. Each time the Warriors would rally from double-digit deficits, the Trojans’ offense would respond with a crucial score in their 49-36 thumping. Matt Barkley looked good throwing 5 touchdowns, but running back Marc Tyler and wide receiver Ronald Johnson, who is almost as good as anyone in the country, also were major contributors.
But the defense, particularly the secondary, is a work in progress. Hawaii tagged the Trojans for almost 600 yards in offense.

The Cards kicked Walt Jocketty out the door despite the former GM putting together the pieces that eventually won them a World Series in 2006. Almost every year, they were the club to beat in the NL Central. But not this year.
Now, Jocketty has built the Reds into a contender and they’re beating the Cards at their own game and closing in on the division crown.
The 2 clubs meet this weekend in a pivotal series in St. Louis. The Cards trail the Reds by 8 games in the division. A sweep or a series-winning outing by the Reds will practically gift wrap a spot in the playoffs. Though Dusty Baker deserves as much credit as anyone, so does Jocketty.
Ironically, Jocketty’s great work in Cincy will probably result in the demise in his friend Tony LaRussa in St. Louis.

Manny Ramirez and the White Sox are doing just fine. Ramirez got a bloop single, but Paul Kornerko, another former Dodger you might have heard of, delivered the biggest blow as the White Sox rallied Wednesday for another victory in Cleveland, Manny’s former home. The Sox head to another one of Manny’s old stomping grounds with a 3-game series in Boston this weekend. Fran Fenton and the boys will probably meet Manny with a limo at the airport.
