Our Times And Tired Storyline

Finally, someone other than us has come out to question the ongoing bias by the L.A. media, the former world champion (a.k.a. the Los Angeles Times) in particular, regarding Matt Kemp. Bob Timmermann is one of the few writers to have the balls to come to Kemp’s defense, wondering why the Times continues to frequently pile on Kemp and make him the scapegoat for all of the Dodgers’ woes. Where’s Casey Blake when you need him? James Loney? George Sherrill and Jonathan Broxton? Frank McCourt?
Sunday’s piece by T.J. Simers regarding Kemp, and more directly Dave Stewart, was another hack job. Typical Simers though. For a while, it was all fun and games with the sarcastic and acid tongue Page 2 columnist, who left San Diego years ago in another attempt by the Times to fill the void left by the late Jim Murray, at a tune of more than $160,000 per year (what does inflation blow that up to now?).
We all got a good laugh with T.J., but like any comic, the laughs get old. Simers, like the Tribune doorknobs who employ him and the ones who have run Times into the ground, has a leash with no bounds. And for the past year or so, his stitch has become jaded, even with readers who found the act funny but now could care less. We were one of them.
In Sunday’s hatchet job of Kemp’s agent Stewart, Simers sarcastically referred to an incident involving of an arrest of Stewart 25 years ago for soliciting a prostitute, who happened to be a transvestite.
All is fair in love and war, right?
On Aug. 19, Steve Dilbeck, the Times’ emotionally-lacking (yep, sarcasm indeed) baseball blogger, upped the ante with this gem regarding Kemp: “Is it even possible for anyone to say or write anything remotely critical of Matt Kemp without his hoard of oversensitive defenders screaming: ‘They’re making him a scapegoat! It’s unfair! He’s being singled out! They only yell at Matty!’
    “Wah-wah-wah.”
Yep, cry me a river. Dilbeck went on to defend Simers’ piece. But since he’s playing defense attorney for the home team, let the record show that Dilbeck got his job at the Times because of Simers. Plenty of writers were more qualified. But in sports journalism, it’s who you know, not necessarily who or what you’ve done.
While the Times was laying off writers and editors left and right, Simers wrote a real tear-jerker about the L.A. Daily News laying off Dilbeck. We’d be the first to tell you how the newspaper business sucks and those in charge have no clue about their most productive employees, but to write a column on a friend and not defend your co-workers is lame in our book. How about that for a teammate?
We’ll let Mr. Timmermann tell the rest of the story. We’re getting a bit nauseous.

Liar, Liar

When Colin Cowherd speaks, we rarely listen. But even when a empty head like Cowherd uses his ESPN platform to abuse his incredible lack of knowledge and credibility, then something must be said. Cowherd had the gall to say Cliff Lee “mailed in” a recent game against the O’s, who hit the pitcher hard. Lee is one of the last players who would mail it in. And to imply such insults the man’s professionally, at the very least.
Maybe if Cowherd did a little research, he’d notice the O’s have been smacking the Rangers around for much of the season until the 2 clubs split a series during the past weekend. And Lee has gotten hit hard a few times since he joined the Rangers. It’s called breaks of the game.
Lee called Cowheard a “liar” and challenged him to come clean with his so-called source. It won’t happen. Cowherd, like plenty of other outrageous radio personalities, enjoys foaming at the mouth for ratings purposes.

Staying Put

Despite all the chaos with the Dodgers, at least the great Vin Scully will return next season. We got worried reading earlier reports about the press conference he was holding today to address the issue. Thank goodness he’s returning. Greatest of all time.

What Bird Doesn’t Fly? A Jail Bird, Of Course

Jay Mariotti, one of the more disliked sports personalities in the business, was arrested earlier this morning in L.A. on a felony domestic violence complaint. Mariotti is an L.A. resident. He reportedly was arrested after an incident with a female.

Come On Dude, It’s Kids Stuff

Despite what Tony Dungy says about the profanities streaming out of the mouth of Rex Ryan, we’re enjoying the hell out of each episode of “Hard Knocks.” Another winner last night.
But we had to seriously cringe as Antonio Cromartie slowly and painfully recalled the names and ages of his 8 kids. Sad.

Summer Madness With LeBron Continues

One of the greatest songs of all time.
GQ is dedicating a substantial piece of its September issue to the King of No Rings. The main story, which revolves around “The Decision,” is written by the notable J.R. Moehringer. The writer also tells about his front-row seat to the circus and the carnival atmosphere surrounding it all.
If you visit the magazine’s website, you get a peek at some bonus coverage, like a piece called “Inside the King’s Closet.” The duds were kinda hokey to us and seemed more like stuff Carmelo would wear. But we didn’t see any Pilgrim outfits like the one Kobe donned recently in the L.A. Times Magazine. The King gets a thumps up for avoiding that diss.

Here We Go Again

Can anyone explain to us why ESPN turns into the paparazzi when it comes to Brett Favre?
ESPN analyst Tedy Bruschi came up huge today. Bruschi ripped Vikings Coach Brad Childress for his handling of the Brett Favre soap opera. As we mentioned here weeks ago, Bruschi brought up how Childress showed his true colors by whining about Adrian Peterson missing a day of mini camp months ago, while Favre has held the team hostage until flying to Minnesota today. And that didn’t occur until 3 of his teammates showed up on his doorstep in Mississippi.

Hog Wash

This story has noted ambulance chaser Gloria Allred written all over it.
Plenty of folks are up in arms over an Arkansas radio reporter being fired for wearing a Florida Gators hat to a press conference featuring Razorbacks Coach Bobby Petrino.
Renee Gork, a Florida graduate and a reporter for KAKS, which bills itself as “Hogs Sports Radio,” was given her walking papers by the Fayetteville station.
It’s definitely a harsh penalty to pay and Ms. Gork shouldn’t have been fired, but did she ever hear of no cheering in the press box? Seriously, I like my sports gear as much as anyone, but reporters know you never ever wear your colors in the press box or to any press conferences.

They Won’t Be Doing T-Mobile Spots Together

Charles Barkley weighed in today with some choice words about LeBron James. “I heard about LeBron’s little tweet today that he’s remembering everybody who said anything bad about him,” Barkley said on ESPN Radio 103.3 FM in Dallas. “And he said ‘everybody.’ Well, I want him to make sure that he puts my name on that (list). I thought that his little 1-hour special was a punk move. I thought them dancing around on the stage was a punk move and I thought he should’ve stayed in Cleveland. Him joining Dwyane Wade’s team was very disappointing to me.”
