Stab in The Dark

Our 5-team parlay for the Association tonight ($10 to win $200): Wolves (-1) over Lakers; Thunder (-13) over Cavaliers; Bucks (-1 1/2) over Knicks; Spurs (-5 1/2) over Clippers; Nuggets (-10 1/2) over Hornets. Notice a pattern?

Letter Perfect

What’s that saying about a picture being worth a 1,000 words?
From Scott Grieve of Carpinteria in today’s letters to the editor section of the L.A. Times:
“As I surveyed the wreckage from the Sunday night Lakers meltdown in Phoenix, I formulated a 5-point plan to put them on track to contend for the world title.
    1. Hire Derek Fisher as head coach under the condition that he retires as a player. He’s intelligent, experienced, competitive and a true leader. He played under some of the best basketball minds in the game. He is respected by all NBA players, something that Mike Brown can only dream about. Besides, I am tired of seeing people blow by him like he was a greeter at Walmart. Derek, think legacy.
    2. Annul the Lamar Odom trade. Everyone knows that Kardashian arrangements last only 72 days and we just passed that number since this ill-conceived trade. Lamar, just tell the Mavericks that you are vastly different people and that you want different things in life. Or have Khloe tell them.
    3. Hire Mike Brown as your video coordinator. That way he and Ron Peace can sit around and discuss stats before every game.
    4. Trade Jimmy Buss to the Warriors for Jerry West or any other person from West Virginia that has actually played in or coached a basketball game.
    5. Trade Stu Lantz to another NBA team. There must be someone out there that hasn’t heard Stu’s clichés … over and over again. “The goal is to win the game” … really Stu?
It’s just my opinion, but the status quo won’t get it done.”

Did We Mention Issues In Front Office?

Friction In Laker Land

Each week, the Lakers seem to have some issues. Last week, it was Coach Mike Brown and Ron Artest “clearing the air” and this week it’s Kobe Bryant and management clashes over trading or keeping Pau Gasol. Before that, Andrew Bynum was bitching and moaning about Brown’s 2-hour shootarounds. Brown, who apparently doesn’t know when to back off, has pissed off several Lakers with his long practices and his gift of gab for being long-winded.
As if that wasn’t enough, the Lakers held a players-only meeting to band together against Brown’s coaching and management’s tactics after Monday’s blowout of the Blazers. For problems, see union stewarts Derek Fisher, Bryant or Gasol.
Business as usual for the drama kings, no? Or maybe it’s just what the doctor ordered for the Lakers, who visit the Mavericks on Wednesday and then the Thunder on Thursday before taking off for the All-Star break.

Did You Know?

Kim Kardashian? Ain’t happening. Just funking with y’all.
Seriously, though, did you know Jeremy Lin’s agent was a brother? I had a feeling yesterday after reading his bio, then desperately searching for an image. Roger Montgomery didn’t even have a mugshot on his website, but the fact that he was a baller at Fairfax High in L.A. pretty much cinched it for me.
He got the Piers Morgan treatment Friday night.

When You’re Hot, You’re Hot

Hey Lamar. As great a guy that you are, here’s a group that got shafted as much as you in the Chris Paul debacle, but they shook if off like water in the shower and are kicking ass.
Eddie Munster and the Rockets made it 7 in a row courtesy of Kevin McHale’s old employers.

Skid Row

Is that you Boston?
Can’t believe my daughter the Celtic fan hasn’t mentioned they’ve lost 5 in a row, the latest to the Thunder and Kendrick Perkins tonight in Boston.

Reality Shows This Isn’t Going Very Well

Folks are getting a bit impatient in Dallas.
Jilted lover Lamar Odom is averaging a disappointing 6.6 points and 4.7 rebounds per game with the Mavericks. On Monday, Odom returns to L.A. to play the Lakers for the 1st time since they dumped him.

Best In The West?

TNT analyst and former GM Steve Kerr, among others, is sold on the Blazers, who hammered the Lakers again Thursday night in Portland. They have the best mark in the Western Conference at 5-1, their only loss coming courtesy of Chris Paul and the Clip Joint on Jan. 1 in L.A. One of those 5 wins came courtesy of the Thunder, who are everyone’s favorite flavor in the West.
“They are a scary bunch,” Chris Webber said of the Blazers Thursday night on the TNT studio show.
Speaking of the Lakers…: Happy 30th birthday to Gilbert Arenas. That brings us to the Lakers. Did Jim Buss or Mitch Kupchak consider signing Arenas instead of the defenseless Jason Kapono? Didn’t think so.
