African American jockeys once dominated the Kentucky Derby. But some ugly history surrounding money and white men putting black men in their place, as some like to say, changed that. The last brother to win the Derby was in 1902. Only 2 have ridden in the race since 1921 (Marlon St. Julien finished seventh aboard Curule in 2000).
On Saturday, Kevin Krigger will ride Goldencents, 1 of the favorites to capture the race and a horse whose part-owner is Rick Pitino.

A broken nose to jockey Robby Albarado earlier in the week resulted in John Velazquez, who was scheduled to ride Uncle Mo, taking the mount on Animal Kingdom. Animal Kingdom, a 20-1 shot, is your Kentucky Derby winner.

Jockey Calvin Borel captured his 3rd Kentucky Derby in 4 years as he rode Super Saver, which was a 15-1 pick a few days ago, to victory in the mud of the classic horse race today in Louisville, Ky. Super Saver also made a winner of trainer Todd Pletcher, who hadn’t fielded a winner with 24 other horses running the circuit.
