He delivers some gems Mulligan uncorked, and the longtime coach could respond with some classics with the best of them, whether it was retorts as hecklers or some of his former players. Whicker recalls a story involving former UCI point guard Jason Works, who Mulligan frequently worked because Works didn’t pass the ball enough to former Anteater star Kevin Magee.
“I do what Jesus tells me to do,” Works said. Mulligan couldn’t resist. “Does Jesus ever tell him to get the ball to Magee?”
