Leaving A Mark
Who’s plates are these? Cali 6USC760? And what’s Tim Tebow doing driving and riding with USC plates?
For the past 2 days, I’ve chased Mark Sanchez and Tebow for a story about the 2 working out at “Jets Camp West.” It is the annual camp Sanchez hosts at his alma mater, Mission Viejo High, located behind the Orange Curtain for our geography-challenged friends. It’s the 3rd straight summer he’s held it there.
Their representatives refused to respond to several interview requests. The funny thing is I cornered Tebow (how many defenses can say that?) at a nearby hotel, but his companion wouldn’t allow him to talk. “We’ll give your card to the people running the camp and have them contact you,” the dude said before bumping his chin rolling up the window.
He just called you an idiot Mr. Lee. He knew, like I did, there was a so-called “media blackout” (guess that meant I wasn’t invited). I laughed, knowing he was crumbling my card and throwing it out the window before they left the parking lot.
Tebow, though, gave an apologetic gesture. He wanted to talk. I’ll always respect him for that.
As for Sanchez, I hope Tebow takes his job. Just a karma thang. Granted, I’m a little pissy for getting blown off (I’ve had better though:), but what disgusted me even more was watching his security detail or the 1 patrolling the campus at Mission Viejo High and how it dissed parents, fans, students and kids for just peeking through the fence. They just wanted a view of Tebowmania. What’s wrong with that? Instead, they were frequently rebuffed, threatened and ordered away from the stadium.
“You got business here?,” one of them growled. “This is a private affair.”
Two of these men were Orange County sheriff deputies. Seriously. Nothing better to do? Sheriff’s deputies? Are you kidding me?
A friend believes I’m still naive about people sometimes being assholes in Cali. I beg to differ. He says sometimes my Oklahoma roots betray me.
“It’s Mark Sanchez, dude. SC guy. What do you expect?” he said.
