Our Pick: Thunder

We said it back in December, when the NBA season tipped off. Everyone and their mother picked the Heat, the favorite to win it all, while idiots like us took the Thunder.
The smart money says the Heat, and we get that. But for credibility sakes, we can’t change horses in the middle of the street. Can’t do it.
Our only reservation about the Thunder is Kendrick Perkins (and Russell Westbrook not getting out of hand and shooting them out of a contest) matching up with some of the big men in the Western Conference. Against the Heat, though, it’s even money since they don’t have a significant presence inside either.
So here’s how we see the playoffs playing out. Happy trails.
    East
Bulls over 76ers in 6; Heat over Knicks in 5; Pacers over Magic in 5; Hawks over Celtics in 7.
Semis: Bulls over Hawks in 5; Heat over Pacers in 7.
Final: Heat over Bulls in 7.
    West
Spurs over Jazz in 5; Thunder over Mavs in 6; Lakers over Nuggets in 7; Grizzlies over Clippers in 6.
Semis: Spurs over Grizzlies in 7; Thunder over Lakers in 5.
Final: Thunder over Spurs in 7.
For all the marbles: Thunder over Heat in 6.

About Time

The Angels should have done this before they broke from spring training, but stubbornly figured they would get a sucker for the contract of Bobby Abreu.

Has Scioscia Already Lost His Club?

Angel fans getting a little tight under the collar? Who knew?
Mike Scioscia is frequently hailed as the best manager in the game, but the Angels haven’t made the playoffs the past 2 seasons. Now they’re off to a shitty 6-13 start and the natives have grown seriously restless. What in the name of Albert Pujols is going on?
We know this. Scioscia needs to find a way to pencil in Mike Trumbo’s name in the lineup card everyday. No excuse for that. He’s been the club’s best hitter, yet entering today’s contest in Cleveland, he had only half as many at-bats as the struggling Pujols.

Show A Brother Love

Chicago’s Tom Thibodeau and Indiana’s Frank Vogel are frequently mentioned as the leading candidate for Coach of the Year honors in the NBA, but how about a little love for Lionel Hollins?

Can We All Get Along?

    Not in my lifetime.
Who would have guessed Joel Ward would generate so much hate when his series-clinching goal in overtime bounced the defending champion Boston Bruins this week from the NHL playoffs? Plenty of folks are grinning because Ward scored the goal on Tim Thomas, the Bruins goalie who snubbed President Obama during the Bruins visit to the White House.
You probably heard how some idiots really showed their true colors on Twitter.

What Are The Odds?

With the NBA playoffs tipping off Saturday, the Heat remain the favorites to capture the title. The Bulls are the No. 2 pick at 3-1 odds, while the Thunder come in at 4-1. The Thunder are tabbed as the favorites to claim the Western Conference title, meaning they will meet the Heat in the final.

Draft Time

The 3rd pick will dictate how the rest of the 1st round goes. The Vikings have the pick and could 1 of 3 ways, including taking USC’s Matt Khalil or LSU’s Morris Clairborn. John Clayton writes about the top 10 factors that could occur.

Spin It

    Our daily thread.
The Dodgers lost their 2nd in a row to the Braves, but Matt Kemp homered for the 10th time this month, tying Gary Sheffield (remember him?) for the most home runs in April. Kemp leads the major in homers and has 23 RBI.
Tough night for Dodgers reliever Javy Guerra, who took 1 in the face and might be knocked out of the closer role.

They’re just funking with us, no?: The Rays handed the Angels their 3rd straight setback. We suspect they’re trying to find out who their real fans are before they go on a roll and blow everyone away. No?
Albert Pujols is 0 for 19 and still looking for his 1st homer as an Angel. This wouldn’t be happening if he was in St. Louis.

Star of Texas: The Rangers pounded the Yankees again to take 2 of 3 in their series. Bob Nightengale, 1 of the best writers in baseball, tweeted that the Rangers are the greatest of all time. Some of us Cardinal fans are a little offended. Didn’t we beat that ass last October?
Oh, and did we mention that the Angels are 8 1/2 games back of the Rangers? Didn’t think so.

Mr. 400: Tip of the cap to Paul Konerko, who slugged, and we mean slugged, his 400th homer Wednesday in a 14-inning loss to the A’s. Konerko hit a bomb to force extra innings in the 9th.
Did we mention the A’s are playing better ball than the Angels? Didn’t think so.
