A Blow To His Image

-
I flip to the morning edition of ESPN earlier today, hoping to get a nugget or two on March Madness news that might give me an edge in my bracket. Sometimes, ESPN has a breaking story on its morning telecasts, but its frequently a rerun of the West Coast broadcast I’ve already watched before bed. But this time the blonde female talking head says almost breathlessly “Breaking news…” She mentions Rangers Manager Ron Washington. Oh shit, I initially think he’s dead. Fortunately, he’s not.
The breaking news was that Washington had tested positive for cocaine. In 2009. Yes, he’s the first manager in baseball that we know of who has tested positive for coke, but this surely doesn’t qualify as breaking news. Are you kidding me? It’s an interesting story, but nothing that stops the presses. It’s a nice scoop for Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman, but…
Breaking news would have been the Rangers firing Washington because of his continued cocaine use. But that isn’t the case. This apparently was a one-time adventure last season since the manager has passed every test he’s been administered since then. And no we’re not so naive to believe this was the one and only time he’s done coke.
